”இலக்கிய சாளரம்” அமைப்பிற்காக செல்வாவின் முன்னெடுப்பில் 15-மார்ச், சனிக்கிழமை, இந்திய நேரம் : மாலை 6.30 மணி.வட அமெரிக்க கிழக்கு சீர்தர நேரம் (EST) : 9 மணி. லா.சா.ரா மற்றும் வண்ணதாசன் இருவரின் படைப்புலகம் குறித்த அமர்வு. வண்ணதாசன் குறித்து அமர்கான சிறப்பு அழைப்பாளராக அழைக்கப்பட்டு இருந்தேன்.

வண்ணதாசனின் நான்கு சிறுகதை தொகுப்புகள் குறித்து 20 நிமிட உரை. வண்ணதாசன் வாசகர்களுக்கு எவ்வாறு மிக அணுக்கமானவராக அமைகிறார் என்பது குறித்து தனிப்பட்ட இரு தகவல்களை நிகழ்வில் குறிப்பிட்டேன்.
அ) : பத்து வருடங்களுக்கு முன்பாக படித்தது, கதொயொன்றில், மாலை நேரம்,வீட்டு வாசலில் இருக்கும் மல்லிகை செடியில் இருந்து மல்லிகை மொட்டுகளை, கதையின் பிரதான கதாப்பாத்திரம் பறித்துக்கொண்டு இருக்கும் சித்திரம் இடம்பெற்றிருக்கும். வண்ணதாசனின் விவரணை, கதாபாத்திரத்தின் இடது கையில் இருக்கும் ஒரு சிறு குவளை குறித்து சில வரிகள் இடம்பெறும். நித்தமும் மல்லிகை மொட்டுகளை மாலை வேலையில் அம்மாவோ,அப்பாவோ, அக்காவோ,தங்கையோ, மனைவியோ, நானோ பறிக்கையில் மனக்கண்ணில் வண்ணதாசனின் கதாப்பாத்திரம் தவறாமல் வந்து நிற்கும்.
ஆ) : ”தோட்டத்திற்கு வெளியிலும் சில பூக்கள்” சிறுகதையில், கதைநாயகன் சிறு மகவோடு பேருந்து பயணம் மேற்கொள்கிறான். 20 பைசா பயணச்சீட்டு (கணையாழியில் கதை வெளிவந்த வருடம் 1978) ஒன்றை நடத்துனரிடம் இருந்து தனக்காக பெற்றுக் கொள்கையில் தனது கைகுழந்தை வளர்ந்த பிறகு செல்லப்போகும் முதல் பேருந்து பிரயாணத்தில், குழந்தைக்கான முதல் பயணச்சீட்டை வழங்கப்போகும் அந்த நடத்துனர் யாராக இருக்கும் என்று யோசிக்கத் தொடங்கிம்அவருடைய பெயரை கேட்டு, இனிப்பு ஒன்றை வழங்க வேண்டும் என்றும் முடிவு செய்துகொள்கிறான் கதை நாயகன். எங்கள் குழந்தைக்கு இன்னும் இரு வருடங்களில் முதல் பயணச்சீட்டு வழங்கப்போகும் அந்த நடத்துனருக்காக சாக்லெட் ஒன்றை இப்போதெ பத்திரப்படுத்த தொடங்குகிறேன் நான்…

Attended a literary meet on 15th Mar, 6.30 PM IST/9 AM EST.
Session was about to discuss literary world of Tamil writers La.Sa.Ra and Vannadasan. I was invited as a special guest to speak about Vannadasan. A 20-minute talk on Vannadasan’s four short story collections. I mentioned two personal anecdotes in the event on how Vannadasan becomes very close to his readers.
A): Ten years ago, I read a story where the protagonist, in the evening, is picking jasmine buds from a jasmine bush in the front yard of his house. Vannadasan’s description of the protagonist’s left hand holding a small bunch of jasmine buds stood out in my mind. Every evening, whether it was my mother, father, sister, younger sibling, wife, or me, while picking jasmine buds, that short story character will be coming to my mind by default.
B): In the short story “Outside the Garden, Some Flowers,” the protagonist travels by bus with his little child. After getting a 20 paisa bus ticket (the story was published in Kanaiyazhi in 1978), he starts to wonder who will be the conductor to give his child the first bus ticket after growing up. He begins to think about asking the conductor’s name and offering him a sweet.
Now, I’m beginning to keep a chocolate aside for that conductor who will give our child for her first bus ticket in two more years…
